a punch in the face from the cradle to the road of life

a punch in the face would have been milder
then this slow tearing down our tissues
and a punch in the face would have been better
then this slow wearing down the soul

from the cradle to the road of life
how many promises have we made?
how many dreams have we swallowed?
how many words whispered in the wind?

first we stand up to walk and then we learn to run
and we believe we have reached the top
but then we fall down rolling in the dust

from the cradle to the road of life
how many promises have we made?
how many dreams have we swallowed?
how many words whispered in the wind?

we come to life crying and then we learn to laugh
and we believed we have reached the top
but then we fall down rolling in the dust

and it is not the dust that burns inside our eyes
it is the stupid grin of those ones who continue to laugh

we come to life blind and then we learn to see
and we believe we have reached the top
but then we fall down rolling in the dust

no, it is the dust that burns inside our eyes ,
no it is not the punch that knocks us down helpless
it is this slow tearing down our tissues
this  slow wearing down the soul

a thousand times we will roll in the dust
and a thousand more we will rise again and extend our hand
one hand forward  to whoever will turn his head
and one hand back to those who will follow in our footsteps

just like birds in seasonal migration
in turn we will fly forward
to break the air and overcome the wind
then we will turn back in flight to rest at the end of the flock

and we will learn to walk again ,
to laugh again  to cry, to run and to fly again
hand in hand we will run chasing our dreams
and we will smile to every new travelling companion
we will find on our pathway

nothing else is given to us for the moment
a smile, a tear, a trail and a breath of wind
nothing else is given to us for the moment
a smile, a tear, a footpath and a breath of wind

poor but happy, together as part of a flock
just like birds in seasonal migration
